Guidance - Re-use of Crown Copyright Extracts
Introduction
In order to simplify the process and reduce unnecessary administration and delay for re-users of Crown copyright material, extracts of up to 250 words from official sources may be re-used without the need to apply for a licence.
What is covered?
This covers both core and value added text. It does not, however, extend to:
- text that appears in tables, diagrams and forms;
- cases where a department states that the material may not be re-used. For example, material that is frequently updated and where out of date information could potentially affect the health, safety and security of individuals;
- the re-use of official imprints and departmental logos unless you have the permission of the department concerned.
What do I need to do?
You may re-use extracts of text provided that:
- it is re-used accurately;
- you identify the source and state that it is Crown copyright. If you are including the text in a publication of your own, you should use the copyright notice - Crown copyright material is reproduced with the permission of the Controller of HMSO and the Queen’s Printer for Scotland;
- it is not re-used for the purpose of advertising or promoting a particular product or service;
- out of date material is not presented as though it was current.
