National Spatial Address Database

Ordnance Survey and the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) recognise the importance of a national spatial address database and in continuing to resolve the complex issues in reaching a solution they have endorsed this key initiative that will be of immense value to both the private and public sectors.

Vanessa Lawrence, Director General and CEO, Ordnance Survey, and Lucy de Groot, Executive Director of the IDeA have recently held discussions about the creation of a comprehensive spatial address database. They both recognised that there is a need for an improved and integrated process by which addresses can be created and maintained throughout the UK. As well as improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the public sector, the provision of up-to-date and accurate addressing is vital to the private sector and the wider economy.

The Ordnance Survey is the national mapping organisation. Local authorities have a statutory role in address creation through their responsibility for naming and numbering streets. The IDeA, on behalf of local government, and Ordnance Survey are committed to a robust integrated addressing infrastructure that builds on the strengths of the current systems, that is designed in a way that facilitates public information, and is economic to maintain. A national approach is needed to facilitate public service modernisation, efficiency, improved customer service and, in particular, to assist with the 2011 census. A national addressing solution is the enabler of joined up and responsive government at all levels.

Both chief executives recognise that there have been developments over the past few months towards linking public sector information. They recognise that there is no easy solution, because of the ways in which national addressing has developed and because of the legislative environment. However, they are confident that these issues can be resolved.

Ordnance Survey and the IDeA agreed to continue these discussions.
